Audience is Everything®

Who we are

If you are like your fellow Kiwis the chances are you sit for more than two and a half hours every day in front of your TV watching anything from The Brokenwood Mysteries to an All Blacks Game

It's almost a national sport watching TV in New Zealand and for good reasons. TV brings us together, lets us share experiences, indulge in thrilling drama series and help us to understand the world around us.

But have you ever wondered how TV stations and others in the media industry know what shows people are watching?

It's all thanks to Nielsen's TV Research!

Since 1990 We have recruited research participants all over New Zealand And rewarded them for sharing their viewing habits
900+ Households all over New Zealand Thats over 2,000 kiwis earning while they watch
Over 6000 Hours of TV viewing measured each day Fueling Nielsen ratings and driving broadcaster decisions

How it works

Within our Panel of homes, each TV set gets a "meter" attached that will capture TV viewing. Households are also given a remote so each member of the household can let the meter know when they are watching. That's how we can share what is being watched and who is watching TV!

Nielsen contacts your home to invite you to participate in the research
This is to get to know you and your household to make sure the research is representative of the national population of New Zealand

Nielsen installs TV meters that measure TV viewing
This is how we collect what TV shows and channels are being watched within your household.
Installation is easy, and meters are non-intrusive to your TV setup

Panel households watch TV and let the meter know when they're watching
This is how we collect who within our sample of households is watching TV. Each month, participating households earn points that can be used in a wide range of outlets.

Nielsen receives TV viewing data from all the participating households into our Data Factory
This is where we take in the all of the data, from all meters across every Panel household, and validate it to make sure it accurately represents what everyone is watching

Nielsen produces TV viewing data from the research participants!
This is where we produce the important insights that power New Zealand's media industry, all thanks to people like you!

Why it matters

The TV Panel is an exclusive club of 900+ households that share their viewing data daily so the New Zealand media industry can make informed decisions based on the content you watch.

Whether viewers stick to one channel, rapidly shift through TV channels or record their favorite episode of The Brokenwood Mysteries to be watched again and again, we need to represent everyone. Young or retired, watching a lot or a little – we need everybody to share their viewing with us. This is the only way to build a fair and representative view of what's happening in the entire country and ensure all voices are heard.
